Tisuće studenata u Ujedinjenom kraljevstvu okupirale su dvorane, urede i druge prostorije na više od 20 sveučilišta. Prosvjedi i okupacije potaknuti su situacijom u Pojasu Gaze, ali su se zahtjevi već proširili i na druga pitanja. „Ljudi su istinski bijesni zbog onog što je Izrael napravio u Gazi,“ rekao je John Rose, nekadašnji organizator studentskih prosvjeda '68, a danas predavač i autor knjiga o Bliskom istoku.
Sve je počelo kad su 13. siječnja studenti na 24 sata okupirali Školu za orijentalne i afričke studije (SOAS). Nakon toga sit-in prosvjedi proširili su se po cijeloj zemlji. Okupirane su sveučilišne prostorije na slijedećim sveučilištima: LSE, Essex, King's College London, Birmingham, Sussex, Warwick, Manchester Metropolitan, Oxford, Leeds, Cambridge, Sheffield Hallam, Bradford, Nottingham, Queen Mary, Manchester, Strathclyde, Newcastle, Kingston, Goldsmiths i Glasgow.
Studenti između ostalog od svojih sveučilišta traže povlačenje ulaganja iz trgovine oružjem; obećanje da će stipendije biti dodjeljivane palestinskim studentima; obećanje da će knjige i nekorišteni kompjuteri biti poslani u Palestinu i osudu izraelskih napada na Gazu.
Ono što razlikuje ovu od prethodnih generacija je nova tehnologija. Vijesti su se brzo širile zahvaljujući internetskim blogovima i prosvjedi su buknuli u cijeloj zemlji. Nakon samo 3 tjedna od prvog sit-in prosvjeda u SOAS-u, studenti su se okupili na koledžu Birkbeck i sastavili nacionalnu strategiju. Krajem mjeseca studenti iz svih dijelova zemlje okupit će se na prosvjedima i tražiti ukidanje školarina.
